Knitting in the Round
Knitting in the round is definitely for you if, like me, you hate sewing up garments. I will outline how a sweater is knitted using this method. Cast on the required number of stitches using a circular needle. After making sure that none of the stitches are twisted and marking the first stitch, continue knitting WITHOUT turning the knitting over. The right side will always be facing you. When you get to sleeve height, knit half of the stitches and then cast on an extra 10 stitches ( called steek stitches) and do the same at the end of the row. Continue knitting until you reach the top of the armhole level. Cast off the steek stitches on the next round. When you have reached the neck cast off all stitches. Now take a pair of scissors and cut up the centre of the steek stitches and turn the garment inside out and sew the folded back steeks to the inside of the armhole that you have just made. To knit the sleeves, pick up the required number of stitches around the armhole on the right side on a circular needle and knit down in the round decreasing as necessary. Pick up stitches around the neck and knit the neckband in the round. Voila! No side or sleeve seams to sew up. Cardigans can also be knitted like this by using a steek up the centre front and then cutting up the steek and sewing back the edges and picking up stitches for the button bands. |
